what's so bad about sleep? I like sleep.

Lately the mere mention of bedtime results in passionate, red-nosed sobs from Little Miss. It's so sad. She just does not want to see her days come to an end.

No, Mom-mom! It's not night-night time! I'm still playing this game!

I, on the other hand, am relieved when my own bedtime rolls around. I relish sleep. I look forward to it. But even more than that, I look forward to her bedtime. Oh yeah. Those teary cheeks don't phase me one bit. I grab her up, assist her in making teary farewells to the rest of the family, and take her to bed. With the lights out, under the warm blankies, she's soon asleep. And in a few hours, I'll join her. Sleeping with a warm little monster is one of the great joys of my life.

first snow of the season

didn't amount to much. Not that it's any surprise.

The snow flurries started shortly after dark last night, quickly powdering the ground. I sent the kids out to play, warning them, "This may be the only snow we get this year." They had a great time running around in the cold, scraping bits of snow together to form what normal children would call snowballs. My children however, snow-deprived unfortunates that they are, dubbed them snowturds.

By morning, the flurries had changed to a cold drizzle and the snow was very nearly gone. A few of the snowturds remained, though. Check out this picture of KK and her giant snowturd:

Middlemarch

Wow.

Okay, I admit it - at some point during the first 100 pages, I almost talked myself out of reading it. I told myself it was because of the hideous cover art, but really... I realized I would actually have to use my brain if I wanted to finish this book.
So I made a deal with myself: no brain-candy (a.k.a. Twilight) until I finished Middlemarch. And I'm glad I did, because Eliot was an amazing writer. She just kept reeling me in, bit by bit. Loved it.
Now I can return it to the library and buy myself a different copy (with attractive cover art) someday, but not before I share one of my favorite passages...
Young love-making--that gossamer web! Even the points it clings to--the things whence its subtle interlacings are swung--are scarcely perceptible; momentary touches of finger-tips, meetings of rays from blue and dark orbs, unfinished phrases, lightest changes of cheek and lip, faintest tremors. The web itself is made of spontaneous beliefs and indefinable joys, yearnings of one life towards another, visions of completeness, indefinite trust.
